Solidarity (Polish: Solidarnosc) a Polish trade union federation that emerged on August 31, 1980 at the Gdansk Shipyard under the leadership of Lech Walesa. It was the first non-communist party-controlled trade union in a Warsaw Pact country. Earlier Solidarity activists celebrated the 31st anniversary in Elblag, a small town some 60 km east of Gdansk. Elblag had close connections to Norwegian city of Stavanger, who sent help in several trailers throughout the eighties.
